Green Port - Black Boats
This project is the first of a two stage project proposed by regional port companies and the engineering sector to assess the feasibility of a major redevelopment of marine engineering facilities in Nelson and Picton, and specifically to:
- Develop an environmentally-certified centre for marine and general engineering, workboat refits, and new commercial boat design and build, servicing the fishing and aquaculture industries, defence patrol tug workboat and pilotage vessels, ferries and tourism vessels at Port Nelson
- Become a regional centre for the oil and gas industry’s marine onshore maintenance, repair and training requirements
- Develop capability in mega-structure design and build including energy, defence, wind power, and major infrastructure blocks demanding sea-side construction and barge delivery
- Develop a Facilities Conceptual Master Plan for improved haul-out and servicing facilities in Picton to service offshore cruising yachts.
Aviation Sector
This project is intended to engage and energise the diverse aviation sector across Te Tau Ihu (Top of the South Region).
The objective of the project is:
- To identify, analyse and quantify key opportunities
- To analyse and formulate a strategy and action plan to accelerate and deepen sector growth through collaboration
- To gain support from industry and key stakeholders for the plan's implementation.
Venture Accelerator Network
One of the key strategies of the Nelson Tasman Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) is growing smart value added industries and enhancing the skill base of the labour force. In order to achieve this, the regions industries and businesses require investment in capital. The Nelson region clearly wants to be identified as a place where people invest in the future.
The EDA, in conjunction with New Zealand Trade & Enterprise introduced the Venture Accelerator Network as a networking vehicle for businesses recognised as having significant potential to contribute to growing the Region's economy.
Participation at these meetings is by invitation and the meetings are typically four hours duration with networking, a guest speaker and presentations. Participants come from a variety of high growth industries including ICT, nutraceuticals, aquaculture, marine engineering, wine, tourism and film.
Regular network meetings are held where best business practice and governance is presented to participating businesses and entrepreneurs.
Interested participants are to be invited to be part of VAN and should contact the EDA for further details.
Potential investors are also invited to attend.
A positive spin-off was the formation of an angel investment group, Venture Accelerator Limited which could provide investment opportunities for VAN participants.
