Nelson Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS)

The Nelson-Tasman Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS) identified the major economic drivers to move our region forward and prosper.

Although first released in 2004, and then reviewed and republished as the 2007 REDS Report, the REDS document has once again been updated in June 2010.

This REDS report is a result of extensive consultation with industry sectors, stakeholders and community groups.   It reviews the region's progress in the past decade and recognised the vision for the region's sustainable development.   The REDS Report considers social, cultural and environmental indicators along with economic performance, so that the true wellbeing of our region is understood and planned for.

The REDS report consists of two parts:

REDS - Part 1

This portion of the report comprises the Executive Summary and the Strategy Overview.   It covers:

  • The shape of the region, shape of the economy, and governance
  • Performance profiles of the regional economy in the past decade (2001 - 2009)
  • Commentary on forecasts across mature, developing and emerging sectors in the coming decade
  • Constraints to achieving the vision for the region
  • Profiles of the region's population and workforce, forecast growth and migration dynamics
  • The place of iwi and Treaty of Waitangi settlements in the long-term development of the region
  • Regional economic performance data
  • The 2007 report also contains recommendations for regional developments.

REDS - Part 2

This portion of the report investigates each of the region's key sectors in detail, together with supporting statistical analysis.

  • Performance, key attributes and challenges facing the region's productive and service sectors
  • Primary sector clusters
  • Support sectors
  • Population and employment growth
  • Dynamics of change in the region.

REDS Recommendations

As part of the Strategy, a set of recommendations were developed. These encompassed work for councils, the EDA, and other organisations. Since the original REDS was published, we have continued to progress these recommendations and to use them as the strategic basis of our objectives and activities.
