Tracking the Nelson Regional Economy 1

Tracking the Nelson Regional Economy

The Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency (EDA) is pleased to annouce the inaugural release of its quarterly review of the Region's economic performance.

This report has been made possible with the generous support of Nelson Airport Limited.

The EDA initiated this report in order to obtain more up to date, reliable and consistent information on how well the Nelson economy is performing.   At the same time, we wanted to ensure that it was as useful as possible to our funders, partners and other stakeholders.

Tracking the Nelson Regional Economy - How the Report can be used

How the report can be used:

  • enhance understanding of the region's make-up
  • strategic decision making
  • marketing
  • advocacy

What the report covers:

  • how the region is doing overall
  • how well off the region's population are
  • how key industries are performing
  • how well sectors are doing overall
  • what the future is likely to hold for the regional economy

To provide a truer comparison, three other comparable regions have been used to benchmark against; Bay of Plenty, Gisbourne/Hawkes Bay and Otago.   This compares 'like for like', rather than national comparisons that may be somewhat skewed unnaturally by Auckland and the other larger metropolitan areas.

The New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER), a leading economic research company was engaged by the EDA to develop this report.
