Early Learning Centres, Schools & Community Education

The region has approximately 60 schools made up of primary, intermediate and secondary, including New Zealand's oldest state secondary school, Nelson College established in 1856.

In addition to the many primary, intermediate, schools and colleges, there is also a good selection of pre-schools and kindergartens throughout the region.

Nelson School of Music

The Nelson School of Music is nationally recognised for its high standard of tuition and as having the only purpose built conservatoire in the country, providing the best acoustics in the southern hemisphere.   The Nelson School of Music is the oldest independent music school in New Zealand having been established in 1894.

More than 50,000 people attend courses, concerts, workshops and take musical tuition.   The school offers practical, hands-on community courses from pre-school level to adult classes.

The auditorium hosts the Adam Chamber Music Festival, Ceol Aneass Irish Festival and Young Composers Workshop, regional choirs and orchestras, and numerous concerts - from rock to classical.

Annually the School presents the Winter Festival - featuring international and local music.

For more detailed information on programmes, tuition, facilities and events, please click Nelson School of Music.

The EDA wishes to thank John-Paul Pochin Photography for the Nelson School of Music images.
